In Shiftdesk, vacation requests follow a clear workflow from the employee through manager approval to automatic booking on the working-time account.
Types of absences
Shiftdesk distinguishes six absence types. Each type behaves differently with regard to auto-approval and the impact on the vacation account.
Understanding the vacation account
Each vacation account in Shiftdesk consists of four values. You find them under **Absences** in the **Vacation accounts {year}** section as a card per employee.
Submitting an absence request (employee)
As an employee, you can create vacation and other absences directly in self-service, without having to write an email to HR.
Approving absence requests (manager)
As a manager or admin, you decide in Shiftdesk on all incoming absence requests from your team.
Year-end carryover of remaining vacation
In Germany, unused vacation days do not automatically expire. In Shiftdesk, remaining vacation is carried over into the new year as **Carryover** and added to the contractual entitlement.
Setting availability (vs. absence)
**Availability** is not the same as an **absence**. It tells scheduling **when** you can generally **work** — and when not.
