Understanding ArbZG warnings in the schedule

Shiftdesk automatically checks every shift against the German Working Hours Act (ArbZG) as well as analogous rules in Austria and Switzerland. These checks are plausibility indications and do not replace the employer's own assessment. Potential violations appear directly in the schedule as a colored badge on the shift.

Meaning of the badges

ColorSeverityExamples
RedViolationDaily working time over 10 hours, rest period under 11 hours, missing break with more than 9 hours
OrangeWarningWeekly working time approaching the maximum limit, many shifts in a row, tight rest period
BlueNoteInformation with no immediate need for action, e.g. contract hours exceeded

Opening details

  1. Move the mouse pointer over the badge to see a short description.
  2. Click the badge to open the Compliance Checker.
  3. In the checker you see all affected rules, the calculated result and suggestions for resolving them.

Resolving typical issues

  • Rest period under 11 hours: move the follow-on shift later or the previous one earlier.
  • Daily working time over 10 hours: reduce the shift duration or split the work across several employees.
  • Missing break: increase the planned break to at least 30 minutes from 6 hours and 45 minutes from 9 hours.
  • Weekly maximum working time exceeded: schedule individual shifts in a different week or for a different person.

Notes

  • Red violations do not automatically block publishing, but they are highlighted again in the publish dialog.
  • Managers with the Owner role can release justified exceptions. The release is logged in the audit log. The responsibility for compliance with statutory requirements remains with the employer.
  • More detailed checks can be found in the dedicated Compliance overview under Reports.
